Frequently Asked Questions

About the Work

What materials do you use? I work with porcelain paper clay and terra sigillata, fired to cone 04 or cone 6. Clear, satin-matte, and opaque CAC glazes add specific surface qualities.

How are your wall pieces constructed? Each piece is built from layered ceramic components and finished with a plywood backing for secure, easy installation.

What inspires your colors and patterns? Travel, the motif books I’ve collected, and my love of Tudor portraits — especially those extravagant sleeves and bodices.

Studio and Process

How long does a piece take to make? My process is slow and intentional. Components are built, refined, and often re-fired. I live with each piece for months before calling it complete.

Are your works one-of-a-kind? Yes. Every piece is unique, and over time they naturally evolve into new series as ideas shift.

Exhibitions and Availability

Can I see your work in person? Yes — I’d be happy to show you the studio in Fremont and grab lunch while you’re here.

Do you exhibit your work? I’m actively seeking exhibition opportunities. If your workspace needs uplifting art, I’m your gal.

How can galleries reach you? Email is best: jschwalbach@hotmail.com
